Preliminary thoughts on Neverwinter Nights 2

I bought Neverwinter Nights 2 with some gift card money just after Christmas, and I’ve been playing it since. I’m still in Chapter 1, in the city of Neverwinter, doing quests for the city watch. I bought and played the first one shortly after it came out, but lost interest in it around Chapter 2. It just didn’t seem that interesting to me and, worse, it didn’t seem all that much like D&D to me. One companion? I mean, come on!

Anyway, Neverwinter 2 remedies a lot of these problems, and I’m liking it a lot so far. I’ve got a fully stocked party right now (my warlock character, along with a rogue, fighter, and druid), and the various characters are really, really interesting. I find myself really wanting to resolve the tension between Khelgar and Neeshka, and not just because it’s part of a side quest. I want to see what happens. I also find myself obsessively planning my character’s advancement. I’ve been a warlock for the last seven levels (warlocks are cool), and I just picked up a level of bard for my eighth level, primarily so I can segway into the Red Dragon Disciple prestige class in a couple of levels.

Now, this game is not without problems. It chugs a little at times, and there are its fair share of bugs throughout the game. Sometimes lines of dialog get cut off, and one time my fighter got stuck in a corner that I couldn’t get him out of (I had to run back to the nearest area transition and cross over to get him back). Overall, though, I’m really impressed with the game. I find that the gameplay, the story, and the whole host of options that are given to you really make it easy to overlook the multitude of minor flaws that come with this game. Better yet, even with the bugs and performance issues, I see it as an improvement over the original in just about every way. I can’t wait to start downloading user-made modules for this game (once I’m done with the single-player quest line, of course).
